1. Edit.

First things first. For some, this is a tough one. For others, it’s no problem – they even look forward to an occasional “purge.” Either way, getting rid of the stuff you don’t need or haven’t used in months (even years!), is liberating. Go through everything. Your books, your clothes, the kids’ toys. Make piles: Give Away, Donate, and even an “I can’t decide, I’ll sleep on it” pile. After that, follow through is key; give your hand-me-downs to your friend who wears your same size, take your donations to the second-hand store right away, and give yourself a decision deadline for the stuff you’re not quite sure of. You’ll feel great. Promise.

2. Hit the garage sales, consignment shops and online classifieds.

Finding furniture with storage can be tricky. Either they’re too pricey or just not your style. This is the time to take a couple of weekends to seek out something that can work. People get rid of old armoires and trunks all of the time because they don’t recognize their potential! A coat of paint or a fresh wood stain will do wonders. Also, older furniture is usually better quality than something you’d find at fancy chain stores today. Now you’ve got  great “new” pieces of furniture to store your out-of-season clothes, linens, camping gear – whatever your tiny closets can’t hold.

3. Turn your ordinary things into works of art!

Bulky hats, jewelry that can tangle and handbags that need easy access are quite possibly the most difficult problems to solve when you don’t have a lot of room. Why not re-think these things as wall art? Group similar things together. A couple of tidy horizontal  rows of baseball hats or purses in the bedroom or near the front door, transform messy piles of hard-to-get-to things, into a nice-and-neat display. Pick up some inexpensive, attractive hooks from the home improvement store and individually hang necklaces. After that, accessorizing in a hurry is a cinch.

Above all, make sure everything has a home. Everything has a place. Everything. You’ll save yourself the frustration of searching for stuff that tends to migrate. These three tips take some additional thought and time, but will make a huge difference without breaking the bank. Some problems, like sparse storage, can get your creative juices flowing (even if you don’t think you’re the creative type) and maybe make you love your living space even more!

Whether you’re moving or down-sizing, packing things up to move or to store requires a bit of organization and a few guidelines to keep in mind.

Be prepared. You’ll want plenty of sturdy boxes, packing paper, packing tape and thick markers. The better supplies you have, the more likely you are to avoid damaging your goods and maximizing the use of the space in your storage space and/or your moving truck. You might be only moving down the street to storage now, but if you pack like you’re moving across country, you won’t regret it later in the event that “temporary storage” turns into “full-blown relocation.”

Here are some categories of goods you might be dealing with and some storage tips or moving tips for them all:

Appliances Tape all appliance doors shut when moving, but wedge doors open in storage. Secure all movable parts with paper or wedge. Always clean your stove before moving and give utility companies a few days notice to disconnect appliances.

Beds Secure bed rails together with rope or plastic tape. As you take beds apart, mark all pieces so you know which goes with which headboard, etc. Place covers on mattresses to keep clean during moving and storage.

Books Books get heavy in bunches. Pack them in small cartons, holding weight to under 30 pounds for easy lifting.

Bureaus Make your bureau drawers earn their passage as extra packing boxes. Fill with small and fragile items. Sweaters, blankets and towels make excellent padding.

Cartons Go easy on your back. Hold weight of all packing cartons under 30 pounds. With marking pen, list contents of each carton on the side.

Chairs Protect all chair legs by wrapping them in packing paper. Leave slipcovers on upholstered chairs and cover them with plastic covers.

Clothing Clothing that ordinarily hangs in a closet should be packed in a wardrobe carton.

Dishes Take your time when packing dishes. Wrap each one with packing paper and cushion them in the carton with crumpled packing paper. Keep dish pack cartons under 30 pounds for easy handling and safe riding.

Glasses Pack glasses carefully. Wrap with foam or bubble pack and pad with crumpled packing paper just like dishes.

Lamps Pack lamp shades in individual boxes with plenty of paper for padding. Lamp bases ride securely in lamp cartons. For safety, pad them well with towels and blankets.

Mirrors Wrap your mirrors in paper mats, place in mirror pack and identify them with your marker pen so you won’t accidentally bang or bump them. Plan to stand them on edge. Never store a mirror pack flat.

Paintings Wrap paintings in paper mats and mirror pack same as mirrors. Mark them fragile and store them on edge, never flat.

Records and Record Players  Tie down the player arm and secure the turntable on your record player with packing paper. Use a paper mat to protect outside finish and load with extreme care. Records should be individually wrapped, like dishes-packed in sturdy cartons and marked “fragile”.

Tables If possible, remove legs from large tables. Extra leaves should be tied together and padded.

NEVER STORE COMBUSTIBLES OR PERISHABLES! Such as old paint, cleaning fluids, gasoline, etc. Make certain all fuel is drained or burned out of gasoline powered equipment. Throw away anything that could possibly cause fire. Do not store food in open containers or any item which could attract rodents or pests.
